A.M. Class comes from 8 - 10 A.M.  and P.M. from 10 - 12 noon
Make sure you check with the bus driver, etc.  Don't miss the last day (1/2 day of school!)

We are happy to have our parent volunteers in our classroom.  The children love having you here, and we can surely use more eyes and hands!  You CAN and DO make a difference!  Volunteers are always appreciated, especially in the beginning of the year!  Just be sure to sign up online on CISD's website, under Parents...Volunteers. You'll get an e-mail in several days, after they've run a background check!  Let me know when you can come!

helping in our class (and school)!

BTW, in October, we welcomed "Miss Linda" Carter to our class.  It is our 1st year in PK with a full-time paraprofessional.  We are very lucky to have her!!!

Learning is FUN in Pre-K!
These are some of the things we will be learning this year!

We present all letters daily.  We discuss CAP, or Concepts About Print, when we read a book.  We identify the parts of a book - front & back covers, spine, title page, title, author, illustrator, how to turn the pages (bottom right hand corner), directionality (left to right and top to bottom), first word to read, etc.
Also, we'll learn the period (means, "stop!"), the question mark (means, ask a question), and exclamation point (means, "wow!").  

We also focus on Story Elements, such as characters, setting, sequencing, summarizing, problem and solution (plot). Practice re-telling the story.  Try acting it out!  We have been reading fairy tales.  Those are familiar to everyone, and that is a great place to start practicing retelling a story.  

We'll learn to count to 30 and recognize numbers 0 - 10.  We will match, count with one-to-one correspondence, practice ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.)  Also, we will recognize groups of up to 5 items, without having to count each item.  We sort by color, size, and shape.  We'll learn our colors (10) and shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and yes, "rhombus"!).

We ask that you READ daily
(public library is free to all and you can even use the computers there!),
please discuss story elements - characters, setting, problem/solution, then, can re-tell and summarize.

Review letter names and sounds,
spelling first and last names, then everyone in the family's names, then friends', etc.....May use magnetic letters, shaving cream on table, playdough,
or flour on a cookie sheet!  Keep it short and sweet, make it fun!

Practice identifying numbers 0-10, then writing them.

Count to 10, then 20, then 30! That's our goal!  Once they reach it, you know it, keep going!!!

And always review colors (10) and shapes (5- circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and oval.  Then, learn to describe them...(pizza, sandwich, party hat, door, and egg), and find them in our environment!

Thanks for remembering to:
  • update any phone number changes or those of your emergency contacts,
  • keep "daily" folders in backpacks and check them daily,
  • send Tuesday folders back (signed) on Wednesday,
  • keep a change of clothes (weather appropriate) in their backpacks,  
  • send a note when they're absent,
  • practice writing and spelling their names,
  • practice letter names and sounds on the Alphabet Sheet in their "daily" folders,
  • read/save/post our class calendar and newsletter,
  • and CLEAN OUT their folders regularly, please!

1 - A straight line is lots of fun, that is how we make a 1.

Knowing our PK Sight Words will definitely jumpstart their reading skills in the beginning of Kindergarten!  We are learning them in our weekly readers... Please cut out and play with them with your PKer. Match them, copy them, spell them, rhyme with them, etc. You will be surprised how quickly they will learn to read, knowing them!
